I’m very excited about returning to university tomorrow. My mind has been fallow for too long, and it will be good to stretch it again.
What I mean is that I haven’t had to think, to use reason or logic, on any serious level for way too long – years in fact. I’m looking forward to engaging in serious discussion, to comparing thoughts on texts, to state a position and defend it, or to explain my position to others and get feedback.
I’m thinking specifically about the “Literary Response to the Holocaust” course – what a wealth of information and emotions to plumb! I’d like to get some insight as to why there are deniers – those who deny the holocaust happened even in the face of so much documentation and evidence. Perhaps that will lend itself to insight to the conservative mind, that odd place where reality collides in what should be a violence resulting in madness, but where the wildest imaginings live as fact and facts are denied in order to cling to wild fantasies.
And what better way to get back into music than by composing? I’ve been trying my hand at a few tunes and things seem to be working out, although it is taking what I consider to be an inordinate amount of time.
I’ve also read a few chapters of Schoenberg’s book on composition and that’s helped – but is there a better way than to have guided suggestions or parameters given in class? At this point I can’t think of a better place to be.
So – first thing tomorrow! Here we go!
